Update: This post has been very popular! Many are not sure exactly what to make of this infamous quote. My opinion, is that Tommaseo is speaking of those who are too afraid to profess their love. Those with the strongest and most passionate love are usually too fearful to partake in it. Those who freely give love do not have the strongest or most fullfilling experience with love. Another interpretation would be that he advises others to to sparingly partake in love, for those who give it away freely are not enjoying it fully. Those who reserve it may experience the most burning and passionate type of love. Just my two cents. Feel free to comment.
